    An hybrid prediction-based routing approach for reducing routing inaccuracy in optical transport networks

The flexibility of OTNs is a feature highly demanded in dynamic scenarios where lightpaths are continuously set up and torn down on a short-term basis. Unfortunately, the availability and accuracy of network state information in dynamic scenarios are both limited, causing a severe impact on both performance and scalability of Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) algorithms. In this paper we devise a promising routing scheme so-called Hybrid Prediction-based Routing (HPBR). HPBR combines prediction strategies with a novel method to select the most suitable routing metric, aiming at reducing both the dissemination of network state information and the blocking probability.     First experimental assessment of ABNO-driven in-operation flexgrid network re-optimization

    Traffic affected by link failures can be recovered using path restoration schemes. In dynamically operated networks provided with a control plane, restoration algorithms run in a centralized element, such as the path computation element (PCE). To increase traffic restorability in flexgrid networks, multiple paths, subconnections, can be used to restore every single affected connection. However, the multipath restoration scheme might result in a poor resource utilization entailing a lesser grade of service. In-operation network planning algorithms can be used to mitigate this problem once the failed link is repaired; we propose solving the so-called multipath after failure repair optimization problem (MP-AFRO) to reduce subconnections count by aggregating those belonging to the same original connection and rerouting the resulting connection to release spectral resources. The MP-AFRO problem is modeled using a mixed integer linear program formulation. In view of the complexity of the model and the limited time to solve the problem, we propose a heuristic algorithm that provides a good tradeoff between complexity and optimality. The performance on the MP-AFRO heuristic is firstly validated by simulation. Next, the heuristic algorithm is deployed inside an in-operation planning tool in the form of back-end PCE (bPCE) inside the application-based network operations architecture controlling a network; the bPCE is connected to the centralized active stateful PCE. MP-AFRO is experimentally demonstrated using a distributed field trial test-bed connecting the premises of Telefonica (Madrid), CNIT (Pisa), and UPC (Barcelona).Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

    Improving reliability in multi-layer networks with Network Coding Protection

In recent years, there is a trend in network research referred to as Network Coding Protection (NCP). NCP combines the use of network coding techniques with a proactive protection scheme with the aim of improving network reliability. Although today's network backbone is a multi-layer network formed by the convergence of IP/MPLS and Optical technologies, the information available in the literature related to the performance of NCP schemes in multi-layer network scenarios is yet scarce. In this paper, we propose a novel NCP scheme referred to as DPNC+. The novelty of DPNC+ is that it exploits cross-layer information in order to improve the reliability of multi-layer (IP/MPLS over Optical) networks against link failures.     Bioorthogonal uncaging of cytotoxic paclitaxel through Pd nanosheet-hydrogel frameworks

    The promising potential of bioorthogonal catalysis in biomedicine is inspiring incremental efforts to design strategies that regulate drug activity in living systems. To achieve this, it is not only essential to develop customized inactive prodrugs and biocompatible metal catalysts but also the right physical environment for them to interact and enable drug production under spatial and/or temporal control. Toward this goal, here, we report the first inactive precursor of the potent broad-spectrum anticancer drug paclitaxel (a.k.a. Taxol) that is stable in cell culture and labile to Pd catalysts. This new prodrug is effectively uncaged in cancer cell culture by Pd nanosheets captured within agarose and alginate hydrogels, providing a biodegradable catalytic framework to achieve controlled release of one of the most important chemotherapy drugs in medical practice. The compatibility of bioorthogonal catalysis and physical hydrogels opens up new opportunities to administer and modulate the mobility of transition metal catalysts in living environs

    Resumen de la tarea Rest-Mex en IberLEF 2023: Investigaci´on sobre An´alisis de Sentimiento para Textos Tur´ısticos Mexicanos

    This paper presents the framework and results of the Rest-Mex task at IberLEF 2023, focusing on sentiment analysis and text clustering of tourist texts. The study primarily focuses on texts related to tourist destinations in Mexico, although this edition included data from Cuba and Colombia for the first time. The sentiment analysis task aims to predict the polarity of opinions expressed by tourists, classifying the type of place visited, whether it’s a tourist attraction, hotel, or restaurant, as well as the country it is located in. On the other hand, the text clustering task aims to classify news articles related to tourism in Mexico. For both tasks, corpora were built using Spanish opinions extracted from TripAdvisor and news articles from Mexican media. This article compares and discusses the results obtained by the participants in both sub-tasks. Additionally, a method is proposed to measure the easiness of a multi-class text classification corpus, along with an approach for system selection in a possible late fusion scheme.Este artículo presenta el marco y los resultados de la tarea Rest-Mex en IberLEF 2023, que se enfoca en el análisis de sentimiento y agrupamiento de textos turísticos. El estudio se centra principalmente en textos relacionados con destinos turísticos en México, aunque esta edición incluyó datos de Cuba y Colombia por primera vez. La tarea de análisis de sentimiento tiene como objetivo predecir la polaridad de opiniones expresadas por turistas, clasificando el tipo de lugar visitado, ya sea un atractivo turístico, un hotel o un restaurante, así como el país en el que se encuentra. Por otro lado, la tarea de agrupamiento de textos busca clasificar noticias relacionadas con el turismo en México. Para ambas tareas, se construyeron corpus utilizando opiniones en español extraídas de TripAdvisor y noticias de medios mexicanos. En este artículo, se comparan y discuten los resultados obtenidos por los participantes en ambas sub tareas.     Inactivation of Fgf3 and Fgf4 within the Fgf3/Fgf4/Fgf15 gene cluster reveals their redundant requirement for mouse inner ear induction and embryonic survival

    [Background]: Fibroblast growth factors (Fgfs) are required for survival and organ formation during embryogenesis. Fgfs often execute their functions redundantly. Previous analysis of Fgf3 mutants revealed effects on inner ear formation and embryonic survival with incomplete penetrance. [Results]: Here, we show that presence of a neomycin resistance gene (neo) replacing the Fgf3 coding region leads to reduced survival during embryogenesis and an increased penetrance of inner ear defects. Fgf3neo/neo mutants showed reduced expression of Fgf4, which is positioned in close proximity to the Fgf3 locus in the mouse genome. Conditional inactivation of Fgf4 during inner ear development on a Fgf3 null background using Fgf3/4 cis mice revealed a redundant requirement between these Fgfs during otic placode induction. In contrast, inactivation of Fgf3 and Fgf4 in the pharyngeal region where both Fgfs are also co-expressed using a Foxg1-Cre driver did not affect development of the pharyngeal arches. However, these mutants showed reduced perinatal survival. [Conclusions]: These results highlight the importance of Fgf signaling during development.     New stimulation device to drive multiple transverse intrafascicular electrodes and achieve highly selective and rich neural responses

    Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) is a promising approach in functional restoration following neural impairments. Although it proves to be advantageous in the number of implantation sites provided compared with intramuscular or epimysial stimulation and the fact that it does not require daily placement, as is the case with surface electrodes, the further advancement of PNS paradigms is hampered by the limitation of spatial selectivity due to the current spread and variations of nerve physiology. New electrode designs such as the Transverse Intrafascicular Multichannel Electrode (TIME) were proposed to resolve this issue, but their use was limited by a lack of innovative multichannel stimulation devices. In this study, we introduce a new portable multichannel stimulator-called STIMEP-and implement different stimulation protocols in rats to test its versatility and unveil the potential of its combined use with TIME electrodes in rehabilitation protocols. We developed and tested various stimulation paradigms in a single fascicle and thereafter implanted two TIMEs. We also tested its stimulation using two different waveforms. The results highlighted the versatility of this new stimulation device and advocated for the parameterizing of a hyperpolarizing phase before depolarization as well as the use of small pulse widths when stimulating with multiple electrodes
